Powis Castle lies in its own parkland immediately south of Welshpool. A stone castle was first built here during the 13th century and was owned by Owain de la Pole, the last native prince of Powys. From the 16th century this early castle was almost totally rebuilt to make a grand country house with buildings ranged around a large courtyard which overlooks the world famous Italianate terraces and extensive gardens below. The buildings house a collection of Indian art and curiosities originally belonging to Clive of India, one of the former owners of the castle.
