MONTGOMERY TOWN

Montgomery is a small town just the Welsh side of the border with England and is probably one of the most attractive towns in Wales. A place of great historical significance, Montgomery sits below an outcrop of rock upon which stands the Castle built in early 13th century. Walking along cobbled streets, passing beautifully preserved Georgian buildings, you can imagine a time when the central square would thrive with the hustle and bustle of market day, at a time when Montgomery was the administrative centre for the old county of Montgomeryshire.

The area surrounding Montgomery must have been one of the most militarised parts of the British Isles for many generations. Within 5 miles of the Town there are the remains of several iron age hill forts, a large roman fort, Offa's Dyke and one Welsh and two Norman Castles.

Montgomery
The river crossing near Montgomery was of huge strategic importance and was the major communication route into Mid Wales from England. Today Montgomery is still a busy little town with an active community. The traditional agricultural nature of the town still exists, but livestock is now sent to Welshpool Market. There are more than a dozen shops including Bunners Traditional Ironmongers and Countryworks Gallery, just two of the interesting places to visit in the Town.
