THE COCKPIT cockpit
Welshpool was granted its first Charter in the mid 13th century and examples of its heritage are to be found in and around the town, from the 12th Century Motte and Bailey site, to the only Cockpit in the whole of Wales still in its original position.

DOMEN CASTLE (MOTTE & BAILEY)

Domen Castle was probably the ruling seat of Powys before Powis Castle was built.

It may be the site built in 1111 by Cadwgan ap Bleddyn, ruler of Powys. If so, this is probably the castle captured by the Anglo-Normans in c1190, and recaptured shortly afterwards by Gwenwynwyn. In 1274 the site was still a wooden structure and was destroyed shortly afterwards. The site, a designated Ancient Monument, can be found near the Railway Station and opposite the main entrance to the Smithfield Market in Welshpool.
